(이스탄불 2018년 4월 17일 PRNewswire=연합뉴스) 지난 10일, 사업가, 박애주의자 및 터키 사반치대학 이사회 명예 위원장이던 고 사키프 사반치(Sakip Sabanci)를 기리는 ‘사키프 사반치 국제연구상(Sakip Sabanci International Research Awards)’ 시상식이 터키 이스탄불에서 열렸다.
이 상은 문화, 사회 및 정치의 모든 부문에 대한 연구를 장려하고, 현대 세계에서 터키의 역할에 대한 지적 관심을 도모하고자 훌륭하고 새로운 연구 사례를 지원한다. 이 상은 지난 13년간 경제부터 해외 정책, 역사 및 사회 역학까지 다양한 주제를 대상으로 수여됐다. 지금까지 13회를 거치며 31개국에서 370건이 넘는 신청서가 접수됐다. 2018년의 주제는 ‘민주적 통치 과제 및 터키와 세계에서의 공생(Challenges to Democratic Governance and Living together in Turkey and the world)’이다.
시상식에서 사반치대학 이사회 설립 위원장 귈러 사반치(Guler Sabanci)는 “터키는 지정학과 문화적 차원에서 서양과 동양을 잇는 다리 역할을 해왔으며, 세계 평화를 위한 지역의 동력이자 세계의 주역으로 활약해왔다”라며 “터키가 지역과 세계 문제에 대한 해결책을 찾는 과정에서 효과적이며 유능하고 일관된 역할을 하기 위해서는 지식 생산, 연구, 과학적 사고 및 토론에 우선순위를 둬야 한다”라고 말했다. 2019년 사키프 사반치 국제연구상의 주제는 ‘국제적 혼란에서 다중 당파주의의 미래: 안보, 경제 및 민주주의 재고(The Future of Multipartisanism in Global Disorder: Rethinking Security, Economy and Democracy)’다.
심사위원상 수상자에는 50년 넘게 민주주의를 연구해오고, 터키와 전 세계 수많은 젊은 정치학자에게 영감을 준 정치학 베테랑 아담 쉐보르스키(Adam Przeworski) 교수가 선정됐다. 뉴욕대학 Carroll and Milton Petrie 정치학 교수인 그는 민주적 체제와 시장에 관한 우수한 연구로 심사위원상을 받았다.
아담 쉐보르스키 교수는 시상식에서 “우리는 국제적인 해결 노력을 요구하는 초국가적인 문제들을 공유하고 있다”라며 “이 상은 국제적 노력을 이어가고자 하는 젊은 학자들과 특히 관련이 있다”고 연설했다.
에세이상 수상자는 “포퓰리즘의 매력과 엘리트 담화의 역할: 터키의 증거(The Appeal of Populism and the Role of Elite Discourse: Evidence from Turkey)”의 저자 Selim Erdem Aytac, “민주주의 해체: 전제 군주 지망자들의 전략적 선택(Democracy Dismantled: Strategic Choices of Would-be Autocrats)”의 저자 Ipek Cinar, “민주적 퇴보와 포퓰리즘 간의 선택적 친화성: 비교 관점에서 본 터키와 헝가리의 사례(Elective Affinities between Democratic Backsliding and Populism: the Cases of Turkey and Hungary in Comparative Perspective)”의 저자 Berk Esen 등 세 명의 젊은 연구원이 선정됐다.

Sakip Sabanci International Research Awards 2018 Jury Prize was Given to Adam Przeworski, the Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Politics at New York University
ISTANBUL, April 17, 2018/PRNewswire/ -- In honor of the late Sakip Sabanci, business man, philanthropist and Honorary Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sabanci University, Turkey, the "Sakip Sabanci International Research Awards" were presented on April 10, 2018 in Istanbul, Turkey.
The Award encourages research on all aspects of culture, society and politics, and to uphold distinguished examples of fresh research with a view to engaging intellectual attention on Turkey's role in the contemporary world. In the last 13 years, The Awards have been given in subjects ranging from economy to foreign policy, history and social dynamics. More than 370 submissions were received from 31 countries for the 13 Awards given so far. 2018's theme was "Challenges to Democratic Governance and Living together in Turkey and the world."
Sabanci University Founding Chairman of the Board of Trustees Guler Sabanci stated in the award ceremony that, "Turkey has been a bridge between the West and East on the geopolitical and cultural levels, acting as a regional power and global player for world peace. We need to prioritize knowledge generation, research, scientific thinking and discussion to enable Turkey to become effective, capable and consistent in finding solutions to regional and global problems." The 2019 Awards theme set as "The Future of Multipartisanism in Global Disorder: Rethinking Security, Economy and Democracy."
The winner of the Jury Prize was Adam Przeworski, a veteran of political science who has been working on democracies for over 50 years, and has inspired many younger political scientists in Turkey and the world. Adam Przeworski, the Carroll and Milton Petrie Professor of Politics at New York University, won the Jury Prize with his outstanding work on democratic regimes and markets.
Adam Przeworski during his speech at the award ceremony stated that "We shared transnational problems which require international efforts to solve. He noted that the award was especially relevant to young scientists for continuing their global efforts."
The Essay Awards were given to young researchers Selim Erdem Aytac for the essay "The Appeal of Populism and the Role of Elite Discourse: Evidence from Turkey", Ipek Cinar for the essay "Democracy Dismantled: Strategic Choices of Would-be Autocrats", and Berk Esen for the essay "Elective Affinities between Democratic Backsliding and Populism: the Cases of Turkey and Hungary in Comparative Perspective".
