(세비야, 스페인 2018년 5월 24일 PRNewswire=연합뉴스) International Nut and Dried Fruit Council(INC)가 이달 21~23일 스페인 세비야에서 World Nut and Dried Fruit Congress를 개최했다. 이 행사는 견과 및 말린 과일 산업에서 유일한 최대 규모 행사로, 약 1,500명이 참가하면서 참가자 신기록을 달성했다.

사흘간 진행된 이번 회의에 60개국 이상에서 전문가들이 참여해 시장 개발, 공급망, 소비, 제품 혁신, 식품 안전, 영양 및 연구에 관한 지식과 아이디어를 공유했다. 또한, 원탁회의, 세미나 및 기조 연설자 발표 등 18건의 세션이 진행됐다.

장래가 밝은 견과 및 말린 과일 생산량
업계 리더들은 올 시즌 견과 및 말린 과일 생산량 전망이 밝다고 예측했다. 올해 생산량은 지난 수년간 유지된 성장 경향을 이어갈 수준인 것으로 예상된다. 원탁회의에서는 2018/2019년 나무에서 생산되는 견과류 생산량이 지난 시즌보다 5%, 지난 10년 평균보다 27% 증가한 450만 미터톤(알맹이 기준, 껍질에 싸인 피스타치오 제외)에 달할 것으로 전망했다. 이 초기 예상치는 지난 10년 동안 관찰된 긍정적인 경향과 맥락을 같이 한다.

아몬드 생산량은 매년 계속 증가하고 있다. 2018/19년 수확량은 130만 MT(알맹이 기준)에 달할 전망이다. 캐슈 수확량은 800,000MT가 넘을 것으로 보인다. 브라질너트, 피스타치오, 마카다미아 및 피칸을 제외하고 올 시즌 가장 큰 증가량이 예상된다. 수확량이 약 29,000MT로 예상되는 브라질너트는 지난 시즌 부족세에서 벗어나 2018/19년 평균 수준을 회복할 것으로 보인다. 세계 피스타치오 수확량은 주로 미국 수확량 증가(보통 ‘평년’ 수준 회복)와 터키에서 예상되는 풍작 덕분에 31% 증가할 것으로 예상된다. 2018년 전체 마카다미아와 피칸 수확량은 각각 12%와 10% 증가할 것으로 보인다. 마카다미아의 경우 주요 생산국에서 재배 면적이 증가한 덕분에 공급량이 한동안 계속 증가할 전망이다. 개암 공급량은 지난 시즌과 비슷할 것으로 예상된다. 초기 예측에 따르면, 세계 호두와 잣 수확량은 작년 평균치를 유지할 것이라고 한다. 2018/19 세계 땅콩 생산량은 지난 10년 평균보다 3% 증가하여 38.7백만 MT(껍질째 기준)를 기록할 전망이다.

2018/19년 세계 말린 과일 생산량은 지난 시즌보다 6%, 지난 10년 평균보다 23% 증가해 거의 320만 MT를 기록할 전망이다. 이는 건포도, 씨 없는 건포도와 커런트(9%), 대추(7%), 말린 가당 크랜베리(6%) 및 말린 자두(5%) 생산량이 증가할 것으로 예상되기 때문이다. 세계 말린 살구 및 무화과 조기 예상치는 평균 생산량 수준인 각각 214,000MT와 126,000MT를 기록할 전망이다.

기조 연설자와 세미나
‘인터넷 전기 작가’로 알려져 있으며, 자신을 스스로 ‘세계 관찰자’로 칭하는 Dr. Andreu Vea가 ‘중요한 사물 인터넷’에 대한 통찰을 제공했다. 유명한 법학자이자 Garrigues 재단 회장이며 Garrigues 법률사무소 명예 회장인 Antonio Garrigues Walker는 오늘날 지정학 경향을 개관했다. 그는 전 세계적으로 증가하는 포퓰리즘을 언급하며 “우리에게는 비관적이 될 권리가 아니라 문제에 맞서 해결할 권리가 있다”라고 설명했다.

Dr. Blackwell은 “천연 박테리아 적인 박테리오파지는 특히 유기농 생산에서 전통적인 살균제를 대신할 수 있을 것”이라면서 “현재 연구에서는 건조 매트의 1차 감염 위험을 줄이는 것은 물론, 처리 과정에서 병원균에 대한 보호 기능을 확장하고자 하는 목적으로 말린 과일에 박테리오파지를 적용하는 방법에 초점을 맞추고 있다”고 덧붙였다.

INC 상의 목적은 견과 및 말린 과일 산업의 우수성에 기여한 우수한 리더와 비저네리를 인정하는 것이다. 세비야에서 열린 INC 회의에서는 몇몇 주요 인물과 기업이 인정을 받았다. Giles Hacking이 INC 부문에 대한 기여를 인정받아 개인 황금 견과상을 받았고, Borges Agricultural and Industrial Nuts가 기업 황금 견과상을 받았다. PREDIMED 연구 그룹이 연구 우수상을 받았고, Can Bosh 레스토랑 소유주 Joan Bosch 셰프가 미식 우수상을 받았다. Nearly 1,500 Professionals from Over 60 Countries Attend the XXXVII World Nut and Dried Fruit Congress in Seville, Spain

SEVILLE, Spain, May 24, 2018/PRNewswire/ -- The International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC) celebrated the XXXVII World Nut and Dried Fruit Congress between 21-23 May, 2018, in Seville, Spain. With nearly 1,500 attendees, the only and largest event in the nut and dried fruit industry has broken its attendance record.

Professionals from more than 60 countries attended the three-day Congress to share knowledge and ideas in market development, supply chain, consumption, product innovation, food safety, nutrition and research. The Congress consisted in 18 sessions including round tables, seminars and keynote speakers' presentations.

Promising Nut and Dried Fruit Production
Industry leaders forecasted promising nut and dried fruit production volumes for the present season, keeping up with the previous years sustained growing trend. During the round tables held at the Congress, the 2018/2019 world tree nut production has been forecasted at 4.5 million metric tons (kernel basis, except pistachios in-shell), up by 5% from the prior season and increased by 27% from the prior 10 year-average. This early estimation is consistent with the positive trend observed during the last decade.

Almond production keeps increasing year on year, 2018/19 crop has been forecasted to reach 1.3 million MT (kernel basis). Up by 5%, cashew crop is expected to amount to over 800,000 MT. The largest increments this season are expected for Brazil nuts, pistachios, macadamias and pecans. Forecasted at around 29,000 MT, Brazil nut production is foreseen to recover from last season shortage and to return to normal levels during 2018/19. World pistachio crop is also expected to be raised by 31%, mainly due to a large USA crop (back to a regular "on year") and a bumper crop expected in Turkey. Overall 2018 macadamia and pecan crops are forecasted to be increased by 12% and 10%, respectively and due to the increasing planted areas in the main producing countries, macadamia supply is projected to keep growing in the years to come. Hazelnut supply is forecasted to be similar to the previous season. According to the early estimations, walnut and pine nut crops will remain within last years' average levels. World peanut 2018/19 production is expected to reach 38.7 million MT (in-shell basis), raised by 3% from the previous 10 years average.

Global dried fruit production has been forecasted to reach almost 3.2 million MT in 2018/19; 6% up from the prior season and 23% over the last 10-year average, on account of an expected increased production of raisins, Sultanas and currants (9%), table dates (7%), sweetened dried cranberries (6%) and prunes (5%). World dried apricots and dried figs early estimates predict average production levels of over 214,000 MT and 126,000 MT, respectively.

Keynote Speakers and Seminars
Dr. Andreu Vea, known as "The Internet Biographer" and who described himself as an "observer of the world" provided an insight into "The Internet of Things that Matter", whereas renowned jurist Antonio Garrigues Walker, Chairman of the Garrigues Foundation and Honorary and Chairman of law firm Garrigues, gave an overview on today´s geopolitical trends. "We don't have the right to be pessimistic, we have the right to face and solve problems", Mr. Garrigues explained in reference to the current rise of populism across the globe.

The Congress also gathered distinguished nutritionists such as Prof. Jordi Salas-Salvado, Chairman of the INC World Forum for Nutrition Research and Dissemination, and Dr. Ramon Estruch, Coordinator of the awarded PREDIMED Study. Prof. Salas-Salvado presented the "New Findings on Nuts and Dried Fruits and Health", while Dr. Estruch gave a lecture on the PREDIMED research, which is the largest ever randomized primary prevention trial showing that a typical Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts is beneficial against the incidence of several major chronic diseases in subjects at high cardiovascular risk. The study was conducted in 16 centers in Spain with nearly 7,500 participants and a median follow-up of 4.8 years. "Results showed a significant (28-30%) reduction in the combined endpoint of heart attack, stroke and cardiovascular death", explained Dr. Estruch. "Researchers found eating a Mediterranean diet with a 30g handful of mixed nuts (walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts) a day may help improve heart disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, weight and brain function", he concluded.

The Congress' program also included a Scientific Seminar, chaired by Pino Calcagni and with Dr. Alison Blackwell as guest speaker who gave a conference on Bacteriophage Management of Salmonella Contaminants of Vine Fruits. "The use of bacteriophage - natural enemies of bacteria- is one possible alternative to the application of conventional bactericidal agents, especially in the organic production", claimed Dr. Blackwell. "At present -Dr. Blackwell has added- studies are focused on methods of bacteriophage application to the dried fruit with the aim of reducing the risk of the initial contamination on the drying mats, as well as to provide extended protection against the pathogenic bacteria during processing".

INC Awards: Highlighting the Best in Industry
INC Awards are aimed at recognizing outstanding leaders and visionaries who contribute to the excellence of the nut and dried fruit industry. Several prominent individuals and companies received a recognition at the INC Congress in Seville. The Individual Golden Nut Award was given to Mr. Giles Hacking, for his contribution to the INC sector; Borges Agricultural and Industrial Nuts received the Corporate Golden Nut Award; the Award for Excellence in Research went to the PREDIMED Study Group while Can Bosh Restaurant owner Chef Joan Bosch was distinguished with the Award for Excellence in Gastronomy. Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella was recognized with the INC Innovation Award for its 100% All Natural Pistachio Chewy Bites.

Finally, INC Executive Director Goretti Guasch presented the INC Annual Report on the last day of the Congress. As part of the marketing activities, the Nuts for a Healthier World campaign was also introduced in Seville.
