(도하, 카타르 2018년 10월 8일 PRNewswire=연합뉴스) 하마드 빈 칼리파 대학교(Hamad Bin Khalifa University, HBKU) 산하의 주요 연구기관인 카타르 생명의학연구소(Qatar Biomedical Research Institute, QBRI)가 미국 보스턴의 하버드 줄기세포연구소(Harvard Stem Cell Institute, HSCI)와 협업 연구 및 교육에 관한 합의서에 서명했다. 5년간 진행되는 이번 협력관계는 당뇨병에 대한 실현 가능한 치료법을 모색하기 위해 필수적인 줄기세포 생물학에 관한 기술교육 및 연구를 포함한다.

제1형 및 제2형 당뇨병의 발병은 전 세계의 건강관리 부문에서 점차 큰 도전과제가 되고 있다. HSCI 연구진이 주도한 줄기세포 연구의 최근 발전 사항은 제1형 및 제2형 당뇨병 환자 모두가 인슐린을 생성하는 새로운 세포를 만들어냄으로써 본인의 상태에 대응할 수 있도록 한다. 이러한 발전은 사회에 큰 영향을 미치는 다양한 질병을 대상으로 확장될 수 있다.

DOHA, Qatar, October 8, 2018/PRNewswire/ -- Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), a premier research institute under Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), has signed a collaborative research and training agreement with the Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) in Boston, USA. The five-year initiative includes technical training and research in stem cell biology, which are essential for discovering viable treatments for diabetes.

The prevalence of diabetes type 1 and 2 is a rising global healthcare challenge. Recent advances in stem cell research, led by HSCI scientists, are set to help both type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients cope with their condition by producing new insulin-producing cells. Such advances can be extended to address many diseases that have a major impact on society.
In this new collaboration, QBRI scientists will work closely with HSCI researchers to exchange knowledge and best practice, and to accelerate the translation of discoveries into clinical applications. In addition to building scientific capacity in the region, the partnership will support ground-breaking research in stem cell biology. Clinical trials that arise from these endeavors will be conducted in collaboration with QBRI's major stakeholders, including Qatar-based Hamad Medical Corporation and Sidra Medicine.
